E-Invoice Requirements for Contractor in Malaysia (2026)
Malaysia's MyInvois e-invoicing mandate is transforming how contractor businesses issue and receive invoices. Whether you're already mandated or preparing for Phase 4 (January 2026), this guide gives you the clear, practical steps to get compliant.
Does this apply to your Contractor business?
Phase 4 of Malaysia's MyInvois mandate covers all businesses with annual turnover above RM 1 million, effective 1 January 2026 with a grace period until 30 June 2026. Below the RM 1 million threshold, compliance is currently voluntary — but collecting the required data now puts you ahead.
Why Contractor businesses need to act now
Contractors often work on large projects with multiple progress billings, retention sums, and variation orders — all of which must be properly structured as e-invoices under MyInvois.
MSIC Code for Contractor
LHDN requires your MSIC (Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification) code on every e-invoice submission. For contractor: 41000–43999 (Construction sector codes) — your primary type of construction work determines the exact MSIC code.
Verify your exact MSIC code at dosm.gov.my or the LHDN MyInvois portal.

What a compliant e-invoice must include
Both your TIN and your buyer's TIN. Obtain from MyTax Portal (mytax.hasil.gov.my).
Your SSM registration number. Required for both supplier and corporate buyers.
Your 5-digit industry classification code from DOSM. Used for LHDN industry reporting.
LHDN CLASS code per line item — identifies the type of goods or service on each invoice line.
Standardised LHDN payment method codes (01–08): cash, cheque, bank transfer, etc.
A cryptographic signature from an approved Certificate Authority — required on every submission.

Frequently asked questions for Contractor in Malaysia
When does the e-invoice mandate apply to contractors in Malaysia?
Contractors with annual turnover above RM 1 million must comply from 1 January 2026 (Phase 4), with a grace period until 30 June 2026. Contractors already billing property developers and government bodies should prepare now as their clients are typically mandated under earlier phases.
How do contractors handle progress billing under MyInvois?
Each progress claim is a separate e-invoice submitted to LHDN. The invoice must include the project reference, the specific work completed in that claim period, and the correct classification code. Credit notes (for adjustments or retention) are also submitted via MyInvois.
Do variation orders need separate e-invoices?
Yes — LHDN treats each invoice and variation order as a separate document submission. InvoiceLah allows you to issue and track variation order invoices with the correct line items and references to the original contract.
What happens if a property developer rejects my invoice for being non-compliant?
From January 2026, LHDN-mandated buyers (including large developers) may legally require you to resubmit a compliant e-invoice before processing payment. Non-compliance can delay your progress payments significantly.
