Understanding Malaysian SST

Service Tax (8%)

Service Tax was increased from 6% to 8% on 1 March 2024. It applies to taxable services provided by businesses registered under the Service Tax Act 2018. Common taxable services include IT services, management consulting, accounting, legal, engineering, and food/beverage services with annual turnover exceeding RM500,000.

Sales Tax (5% or 10%)

Sales Tax is a single-stage tax levied on manufactured goods in Malaysia. The rate depends on the type of goods: 10% applies to most taxable goods (electronics, beverages, cosmetics), while 5% applies to certain items like food products, construction materials, and petroleum products.

Who needs to register for SST?

Service providers must register for Service Tax if their annual taxable turnover exceeds RM500,000. Manufacturers must register for Sales Tax if their annual taxable turnover exceeds RM500,000. Once registered, you must charge SST on your invoices and remit it to LHDN every 2 months.

How to show SST on your invoice

Your SST-registered invoices must show your SST registration number, the taxable amount, the SST rate applied, and the SST amount separately. The total amount should include SST. InvoiceLah handles all of this automatically when you enable SST in your invoice settings.
