E-Invoice Requirements for Freelancer in Malaysia (2026)
Malaysia's MyInvois e-invoicing mandate is transforming how freelancer businesses issue and receive invoices. Whether you're already mandated or preparing for Phase 4 (January 2026), this guide gives you the clear, practical steps to get compliant.
Does this apply to your Freelancer business?
Phase 4 of Malaysia's MyInvois mandate covers all businesses with annual turnover above RM 1 million, effective 1 January 2026 with a grace period until 30 June 2026. Below the RM 1 million threshold, compliance is currently voluntary — but collecting the required data now puts you ahead.
Why Freelancer businesses need to act now
Freelancers often bill multiple clients across different projects — making it critical to have a system that captures the right data for every invoice from day one.
MSIC Code for Freelancer
LHDN requires your MSIC (Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification) code on every e-invoice submission. For freelancer: Identify your MSIC based on your main freelance service (e.g., 74100 for graphic design, 62010 for software development).
Verify your exact MSIC code at dosm.gov.my or the LHDN MyInvois portal.
MyInvois rollout timeline (all phases)
- August 2024 (Phase 1): Businesses with turnover > RM 100 million
- January 2025 (Phase 2): Businesses with turnover > RM 25 million
- July 2025 (Phase 3): Businesses with turnover > RM 5 million
- January 2026 (Phase 4): All remaining businesses above RM 1 million
- Grace period ends: 30 June 2026 — full enforcement begins
What a compliant e-invoice must include

Your SSM registration number. Required for both supplier and corporate buyers.
Your 5-digit industry classification code from DOSM. Used for LHDN industry reporting.
LHDN CLASS code per line item — identifies the type of goods or service on each invoice line.
Standardised LHDN payment method codes (01–08): cash, cheque, bank transfer, etc.

Frequently asked questions for Freelancer in Malaysia
Does a freelancer need to issue e-invoices in Malaysia in 2026?
If your total annual income (including all clients) exceeds RM 1 million, you must comply with MyInvois from 1 January 2026 (grace period until 30 June 2026). Most solo freelancers fall below this threshold, but collecting the required data now is still best practice.
What is the MSIC code for freelancers in Malaysia?
MSIC codes vary by service: graphic designers use 74100, software developers use 62010, writers use 90003, and consultants use 70200. Your main service determines your MSIC code — check dosm.gov.my for the full list.
Do freelancers need to collect their client's TIN for e-invoices?
Yes — for B2B invoices, LHDN requires the buyer's TIN on every e-invoice. Ask your corporate clients for their TIN when onboarding. Clients registered on MyTax Portal can provide this easily.
Can InvoiceLah help freelancers prepare for e-invoicing?
Yes. InvoiceLah collects all 55 LHDN-required fields — including TIN, BRN, MSIC code, and classification codes per line item. Your invoice data is ready for direct submission when InvoiceLah's MyInvois integration launches Q2 2026.
