E-Invoice Requirements for Lawyer / Legal Firm in Malaysia (2026)
Malaysia's MyInvois e-invoicing mandate is transforming how lawyer / legal firm businesses issue and receive invoices. Whether you're already mandated or preparing for Phase 4 (January 2026), this guide gives you the clear, practical steps to get compliant.
Does this apply to your Lawyer / Legal Firm business?
Phase 4 of Malaysia's MyInvois mandate covers all businesses with annual turnover above RM 1 million, effective 1 January 2026 with a grace period until 30 June 2026. Below the RM 1 million threshold, compliance is currently voluntary — but collecting the required data now puts you ahead.
Why Lawyer / Legal Firm businesses need to act now
Law firms bill corporate clients who are already under MyInvois mandates. Non-compliant invoices from legal firms risk delayed payment from mandated buyers who cannot claim input tax credits.
MSIC Code for Lawyer / Legal Firm
LHDN requires your MSIC (Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification) code on every e-invoice submission. For lawyer / legal firm: 69100 (Legal Activities).
Verify your exact MSIC code at dosm.gov.my or the LHDN MyInvois portal.
MyInvois rollout timeline (all phases)

What a compliant e-invoice must include
Both your TIN and your buyer's TIN. Obtain from MyTax Portal (mytax.hasil.gov.my).
Your SSM registration number. Required for both supplier and corporate buyers.

LHDN CLASS code per line item — identifies the type of goods or service on each invoice line.

Frequently asked questions for Lawyer / Legal Firm in Malaysia
Do law firms need to issue MyInvois e-invoices in 2026?
Yes — law firms with annual turnover above RM 1 million must comply from 1 January 2026. Legal firms billing large corporate clients are particularly affected. The Bar Council has been advising members to prepare.
Are legal fees subject to SST on e-invoices?
Legal services are subject to Service Tax at 8% (from 2024) if the firm's annual revenue exceeds RM 500,000. Professional disbursements (court fees, stamp duties) passed through to clients should be listed separately on the invoice.
How should law firms handle disbursements and professional fees on e-invoices?
Professional fees and disbursements should be listed as separate line items on the e-invoice, each with the correct classification code. Disbursements typically have a different SST treatment from professional fees — InvoiceLah allows per-line-item tax classification.
What happens with client trust account invoicing under MyInvois?
Trust account management is separate from invoicing. The e-invoice covers the professional fees and disbursements billed to the client. Trust account entries are accounting records, not invoices, and are not submitted to LHDN via MyInvois.
